Our History

Open and Welcoming

Hanks Chapel Church values the diversity within our congregation and community by recognizing every individual’s inherent worth and dignity, as we are all created in the image of God. We believe God’s love is universal and calls us to embrace all members of society regardless of race, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical or mental capabilities, economic standing, marital status, or faith background. We acknowledge and honor all forms of loving and committed relationships.

Hanks Today

Hanks Chapel has a rich history shaped by our commitment to self-governance and community involvement. Our church council, consisting of key representatives from all groups, leads us with wisdom and unity. Together, we continue to grow and serve, ensuring that our church remains a welcoming place for all..

Church History

Hanks Chapel has been a beacon of faith since our inception in 1835 by John Hanks. For nearly two centuries, we have served as a spiritual home and community hub. Initially named the Christian Church, we underwent significant changes, becoming Congressional Christian in 1935, and uniting with the United Church of Christ in 1957.

Rich in history, our congregation consists of members who can trace their lineage back to those pioneering souls, proving that legacy and faith go hand in hand at Hanks Chapel.
